ONE DAY IN EDEN C.2006

Reptilian scales glistened like diamonds, rubies and emeralds in the purity of Eden’s Light..

Flowing through the dappled sunlight, it rippled along the branches until it clung with sharpened claws just above her head.

Jewel eyes held hers with such ageless knowledge
that she put down the lilies she’d been holding and gazed back.

 “Who are you?” she asked.

“Whoever you want me to be,” Serpent answered.

“You are the most beautiful creature I’ve seen,” she whispered, “and I’ve lived here a long time.  Why have I not seen you before?”

“Ah,” Serpent breathed, “I’ve been here.  Watching.  Wondering about you.”

“Wondering?  Did the Man name you with the others as He brought you by?”

“Oh, yes, he called me Serpent.  But I am more than that.  I can give you anything you desire.”
Reptilian scales glistened as Serpent’s body caught the sunlight.

“Desire?  What is desire?”

“Wanting.  I can give you what you want.”

“But I have everything.  Nothing is denied us here.”

“Everything?  Did He say you could have everything?”

“Well, He did warn us about this tree.  It’s in the very center of the Garden and it is very lovely, isn’t it?”

“It is very lovely.  And the fruit is ripe and luscious. Why won’t He let you have it?”

“He says if we so much as touch it, we will die.”

 “Then, why are you here?”
Reptilian scales glistened as the Serpent’s tail flicked lazily in the air, knocking a leaf from the tree.

“I was curious.  I wanted to see what it looked like.  But I won’t touch it.”

“I’m touching it.  And I’m still alive.”

 “You are.”

“Are you sure you understood Him?  If I am alive, surely YOU won’t die if you just touch it.  See how beautiful the leaves are!”
Reptilian scales mirrored the sun and gave back Eden’s light in rainbows of iridescence.

“Here, I’ll pick some leaves for you so you won’t have to touch it.  Feel how soft they are against your skin.  See, you did not die from the touch.  Nor will you die from eating the fruit.  I know a secret I’ll share with you, and with your partner over there.  Come closer, the both of you.”
Reptilian scales glistened as Serpent plucked the fruit with emerald claw.
“If you eat this fruit, your eyes will be opened and you will know all things, just like He does.  He doesn’t want that, you know.  He wants all this for Himself.  He doesn’t want you to become gods! One bite is all it takes.  One bite of this delectable fruit and you will know all the secret things of the universe!”

“It is beautiful and so fresh.  Thank you.  Here, my husband, taste the power of its flesh.

Reptilian scales glistened in the purity of Eden and Serpent slipped aside into darkness.

“See, husband, we are not dead.  Don’t you feel refreshed and powerful?  Do you feel like a god?  Do you feel the power of knowledge?

Reptilian scales glistened as serpent watched the two fill their arms with fruit and turn away to feast.  He had accomplished a feat no other creature had even attempted.  Creation was spoiled. The bond was broken.  Man had become his own god.  Maniacal laughter echoed through the holy place.

With fruit lifted to her lips, the woman heard and Truth flooded reality. She looked at her husband. Juice dripped from his lips in crimson rivulets, running down his nakedness.  She looked down at the stain spreading over her breasts.  Wild-eyed, she grasped the first leaves that came to hand, scrubbed at the stain, and covered herself.  Seeing her fear mirrored in the eyes of her husband, she broke off branches from the Tree and gave them to him.

Reptilian scales glistened in the purity of Eden.  For one moment Serpent would maintain his place as the most crafty and beautiful of all living creatures.  One moment to walk the earth on powerful legs.  One moment to scorn the earth beneath his feet.  One moment to feel the cool of the day on his back.

 “Adam.  Where are you?”

THE WINDFALLOW CHRONICLES

WINDFALLOW: a world where man never sinned, angels are visible and common building materials are gemstone. Now, a demon, the Jackal, has set his sights on the tiny planet, and seeks to seduce it as Satan seduced Earth. Because the Fallowfolk never allowed sin to enter their world, the Jackal cannot be physically present. However, he can ensnare humans from Earth and force them to do his will there.

Zachary Thomas, teenager from a small Indiana town, “accidentally” falls into a gate left open between the worlds. So begins his involvement with the Fallowfolk, helping them to understand the ways of humans and the minds of the crooks employed by the Jackal.

There are presently five books in the series; four complete and one 3/4 done. Their descriptions follow:

Book I: THE GREAT BELL: In which Zach is introduced to Windfallow as an “Accidental Hero”. He meets Angari, an Alari, or angel, who appears in all consequent books, as well as the Council or group with which he works to defeat the Jackal. Thugs have stolen one of the Great Bells from the Bell Towers in Belcross, and taken it to earth. The Jackal is not named in this book.

Book II: OF ROCKS AND GOLD: in which the thugs return to steal the fabulous gemstone of Windfallow. Zach disguises himself as one of the ‘mindless’, a subspecies of Fallowfolk who live in tunnels under the Barrier Wood, and spies on the crooks. He finds the ‘King of the Barrier Wood’ uses an amulet to open a gate into the world and helps Angari capture the amulet through which the Jacal controls the crooks. The amulet is thrown into a volcano in Hawaii.

Book III: THE DECEIVER: This time the Jackal inhabits the figure of a jackal he commands an artist to create. Ensnaring her and her boyfriend, he sends them to Windfallow in another attempt to corrupt it. More of the beauty of Windfallow is seen here and Zach’s family is also brought to the planet as the Jackal has discovered his identity and he must be protected. This time the demon is defeated and, bound with crystal chain, buried in a glacier in the Arctic.

Book IV: CARNIVORE: A team of geolgists discover a body buied in the ice, excavate it and find it wrapped in a crystal chain. When the chain is touched by humans, it explodes leaving a huge crater and no remains of the team. The demon is loosed once more and invades the mind of a groundskeeper in a zoo in Zach’s hometown. He forces the man and his common-law wife to take a snow leopard to Windfallow in an attempt to corrupt the animals. When this fails, the Jackal brings a band of thugs in to kidnap the King of Lower Windfallow and his family. This also fails and the Jackal is at last thrown into outer darkness where he can never return to the inhabited worlds.

Book V: A CURIOUS LIGHT: takes place many years in the futuer. All gates between Earth and Windfallow have been closed. However, a space exploration vessel has noticed a small planet enveloped in a halo of curious light. One of the away team members has a family idol that he has never taken seriously…
SPLINTERS OF LIGHT

Acollection of poems selected from forty years of writing with an introduction by Gloria Gaither. This book contains the award-winng poem, MINNIE REMEMBERS. Minnie has been reprinted in hundreds of periodicals, religious and secular and made into two films, one by United Methodist Communications and one by the American Nursing Association. It was awarded the Golden Eagle in 1977 by CINE.

THE FAR SIDE OF CHRISTMAS

First published as Rachel’s Daughters, the book chronicles the journey of Rachel, a Jewish mother whose first born son was killed in Herod’s Slaughter of the Innocents after the birth of Christ. Rachel and her husband become friends with the Holy Family. But when Jehovah warns them to take Jesus to Egypt to escape from Herod, Rachel rejects Him as betraying her own son. The story takes Rachel from Bethlehem, to Arimathea to Galilee as she struggles to regain her faith. And unexpected ending leaves the reader satisfied and strengthened in faith, with a renewed interest in the real lives of Biblical characters. The times and traditions of that era have been scrupulously researched and where the story touches on Scripture, it is true to what is written.

As of today, the full series of the WINDFALLOW CHRONICLES in online and available for download.  It has been a long summer as I learned first how to navigate in DeskTopAuthor with the help of their great tech, Alex in Australia, and Nephew, Les Booth, a bit nearer home.  Many phone calls, many posts, many frantic calls for help from Auntie Ditz, but it was worth it.  After the books were turned into ebooks at DTA, it was time to set them adrift in the sea of Affilliate Sellers where they are supposed to be seen on a bazillion websites. (I’m waiting for that to happen!)  More techs, this time in Minneapolis and more emails to Les.

Now the books are out there for you to decide their fate.  If you see this, won’t you PLEASE just by the first one?  It’s only $5. Couldn’t hurt. And I could actually see something other than accoutn $00.00 on RegNow.

The books are all described here and on the website, www.mindsinger.com, but I will put them in the correct order here so you can, if you choose, buy them one by one.  They are:

1. THE GREAT BELL

2. OF ROCKS AND GOLD

3. THE DECEIVER

4. CARNIVORE

5. A CURIOUS LIGHT

There is the germ of an idea in my head for a sixth book, but it has not matured to the point where I can talk about it.  But, if these books begin selling and it looks like there is a demand for another, the juices just might start flowing.

For now, though, I am preparing another novel — beginning to work out illustrations for chapter faces and setting it up at DeskTopAuthor.

It will be a totally different direction for the WINDFALLOW series.  RACHEL’S DAUGHTERS: the far side of Christmas, is the story of a woman whose firstborn son is killed in Herod’s slaughter of the Innocents at the birth of Christ.   How does a woman deal with that?  What happens to faith?  The book will be released within the month.

So, thanks Les. Thanks Alex and Brian and Clint.
